Ages 2 ½—6 years

The Primary program is based on carefully applied Montessori principles. The program offers a unique cycle of learning designed to incorporate the young child’s sensitive years, ages 2 ½ through 6. Each year in the class the child develops different skills and explores materials in new ways. The child experiences a sequence of activities that indirectly prepares her/him for the next level of learning. The child’s “kindergarten” year in the Primary cycle is the consolidation and mastery of knowledge and creative development that he/she brings to fulfillment, not only for her/himself but for the benefit of the entire classroom community. Therefore, it is essential for your child’s full development that he/she completes the entire program. At the completion of the Primary program, your child will be ready to enter first grade.

The special mixed-age community of the Primary program benefits both the older and younger members. There is a deep sense of caring and respect for one another and for the environment. Courtesy and social interactions are important components of the classroom experience.

The Primary classroom includes areas of Practical Life, Sensorial Exercises, Mathematics, and Language Development. Lessons are also given in history, geometry, biology, geology, and geography. Art, music, and literature are integrated into the classroom activities.

Younger children participate in the half-day program in the Montessori classroom, after which they may be picked up at 1:00 pm or full day, which includes an afternoon nap/rest period*. Older children (4 ½—5) are invited by the Guide to attend the Extended Day program, which continues with activities from the morning work period and extends to include a broader range of activities meeting the academic needs of the older children.

* A note on nap/rest periods: per the Washington State licensing requirements, all children under the age of 5 attending full-day programs must be offered a minimum 45-minute rest period.
